Postural patterns, repetitive strain, scar tissue, chronic injury, and pain can all lead to dysfunctional patterns in the myofascia. Once the tissue has been damaged or hardened, stress transmission is poor, which can increase pain and tension. This course provides practitioners with the tools needed to engage in self-myofascial release for the whole body using therapy balls and foam rollers. Practitioners will also complete the course with the ability to teach this skill set to their patients. This will increase patient function, satisfaction, and retention.

In this course, you will learn:

  • An advanced understanding of fascia, self-myofascial release, and the tools needed to engage in self-myofascial release for the main muscle groups in the body.
  • An in-depth understanding of the major muscle groups and their functions.
  • Myofascial pain patterns and symptoms of each muscle segregated into regions of the body.

Under the CMTO’s new Quality Assurance Program (STRiVE), courses are no longer granted approval by the CMTO. It is up to the learner to demonstrate that a course is relevant to their learning goals and the STRiVE competencies. We have provided the description below to help the learner link the course to the STRiVE competencies. A course is often related to more STRiVE competencies than those listed.

The competencies below are established in the CMTO continuing education guidelines. This course addresses the competencies in many ways, including those described below.

Function in a client-centred manner. This course reinforces the importance of home care in a patient’s treatment plan. Various self-myofascial release techniques are covered in depth to enable the RMT to select the appropriate exercises, make treatment modifications as necessary, and provide education to the patient.

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course provides the RMT with the opportunity to learn and become competent in an advanced treatment technique that can be integrated into a massage therapy treatment and/or taught as homecare. This knowledge involves recognizing where use of this modality is appropriate, and how to use this within the parameters of the RMTs scope of practice. Additionally, the course highlights high risk conditions where the limits of the RMTs scope of practice are reached, indicating the need to refer a patient to a medical doctor and/or collaborate with other medical professionals.

Maintain personal wellness consistent with the needs of practice. This course provides the RMT with exercises for self-myofascial release, with the intention that the RMT personally adopt these suggestions, in addition to teaching to patients where appropriate. Through taking this course, the RMT engages in maintenance of their own health, wellbeing and personal care, to ensure that they are able to provide optimal patient services.

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course was developed based on current evidence and research by a Registered Nurse experienced in performing self-myofascial release and conducting workshops on this topic. The Continuing Education by CCMH promise is to evaluate every course on a biannual basis to ensure any developments or changes in the profession are reflected in course content. Thus, RMTs who take this course and adopt its recommendations can be assured that they are practicing in a manner consistent with current developments. A resource list is included in the downloadable guide to every course so that RMTs can conduct further research and/or confirm course findings. Any treatment recommendations are based on this research and the opinion and experience of the RMT who developed the course. Tracey is a Registered Nurse and Certified Yoga Therapist whose formal education includes post-secondary studies in: molecular biology, nursing, critical care nursing, advanced life support, anatomy & pathophysiology, parenting/child development, health education, perinatal care, Swedish massage and Thai yoga massage. She has accumulated 20 years of experience in clinical assessment (encompassing physical, mental and emotional health).

In the field of Yoga, she has completed over 2500 Hours in Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapy Training including Jivamukti Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Kids Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Hatha Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation. She has also led over 2000 hours in Yoga Teacher Training, over 3000 Hours in Private Yoga/Yoga Therapy and Teacher Mentorship Sessions and over 10,000 hours teaching yoga classes, workshops, and events.
